One of the reasons why many international students choose to study in Canada is because it is more affordable than many other countries. Though studying in Canada is more affordable, there are many who cannot afford it with tuition often costing tens of thousands of dollars per year. The good news is there are scholarship options for undergraduate international students studying in Canada. These scholarships are usually offered by the government or other institutions.

Undergraduate scholarships are strictly merit-based scholarships which means it is based on your academic excellence from your high school or secondary school. They are also very competitive and limited.

However, there are two types of scholarships that you can apply for. The two types of scholarships are Entrance Scholarship and Program Scholarship

Entrance Scholarships

Entrance Scholarships are scholarships that are given to you just for entry into the program and this is a one time program. This amount could range from $1000 to $10000 depending on the school and the cost of the program.

Entrance scholarships are offered based on a student’s academic excellence, leadership abilities, research proposals, and extra-curricular involvement.

Program Scholarship

Program scholarship is given for the entire program which could be 4 – 5 years. The first-year scholarship amount is typically guaranteed. However, the second to the final year of your studies is based on maintaining a certain grade to continue to receive the scholarship. This means while the scholarship may have been granted to you at the beginning of your studies, you must continue to maintain a certain CGPA to continue to receive that money.
